- Major injuries or illnesses are anything that requires a trip to the hospital.
- Many major injuries are life threatening, but some are not.
- Discuss: What kinds of injuries could be considered minor? Students should give answers such as:
- cuts
- scratches
- scrapes
- bruises
- punctures
- Ask: How could your prevent getting such wounds?
- Demonstrate: as the students list wounds, you can show the injuries on an apple.
- Use a food grater to demonstrate a scrape.
- A knife can be used to show cuts.
- Knives can also be used to show puncture wounds, but any narrow sharp object (nail, pencil, etc) can be used.
- The apple can be bruised by dropping it on the floor.
- Bites can be demonstrated by eating part of the apple.
- Treatment of cuts and scratches:
- Wash the wound.
- Apply a dressing and bandage.
- Dispose of gloves properly and wash your hands.
- Treatment for bruises:
- Give them an ice pack.
- Tell an adult.
