Emergencies can happen at any time, and you need to have a plan to follow.
Make a map of your home or meeting place. Take note of all doors and windows.
Try to find at least two ways out of every room.
Are the windows easily opened?
Are any of the doors blocked?
Do any family members need special assistance?
Are there any exits on the second floor? Should you buy escape ladders?
Now that you have your emergency exit planned, discuss where you will go once you are outside.
You need to have a meeting place because if everyone goes to a different place, then nobody knows who made it out of the house.
Make sure you pick a safe place that everyone in your family can reach.
Make sure that everyone knows the plan. Practice it until everyone knows what they should do.
Look at ways to make your house safer in the first place.
Are there any fire hazards?
Do the smoke detectors work?
