  • Check – scene
    • Is it safe to be here?
      • Discuss why that question is important.
      • Responders do no good if they get injured too
    • What happened?
      • Discuss why this question is important.
      • The cause of an accident could be very important information for EMS to have when they are fixing it.
      • What can you do to find out what happened?
    • How many people are hurt?
      • Important because other people could be hurt
      • the operator will want to know how many people need help.
    • How many can help?
    • How far away is help?
  • Check—person
    • Are they conscious?
      • Tap and shout
    • Check for breathing
    • Check for bleeding
    • Explain what a hurry case is
  • Call
    • dial 911 or local emergency number
      • send someone else to call
        • why would you want to send someone else to call?
        • Allows you to stay with the injured person and help them.
      • make the call yourself
        • say “this is an emergency call”
        • state:
          • who you are
          • what happened
          • where it happened
          • when it happened
          • how many people are hurt
        • don’t hang up
          • the operator may ask more questions
          • the operator may give you more instructions
